After creating an audience for my Citizen Science Project, I generated 3 different ideas for my app/website. Using my ideas from the Crazy 8 activity as a starting point, I’ve illustrated my ideas by sketching 3 ideas on sketch paper. See below…

IDEA 1 | Storm Spotting App

Throughout the world, tornadoes fall from the sky and are not always reported. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, an average of 1,000 tornadoes are reported, creating 400 million dollars in damage and kills about 70 people every year. I sketched my first idea, of an a redesigned, non-gamified app that will allow the user to report their location of the storm and the type of action that they observed. While most people go to social media or call the local authorities to report severe, this app will report directly to the NOAA.

IDEA 2 | Astronomy App

According to Cornell University, a shooting star is expected to be observed every 10 to 15 minutes when stargazing. I sketched my second idea, of a redesigned, non-gamified app that will allow the user to report shooting stars, meteor showers, and comets that they observe while stargazing. Most people don’t report what they see when they are stargazing, this app can help the user report easily and quickly an astronomy administration, such as NASA or college university.

IDEA 3 | Weather Reporting App

According to Convergence, the CoCoRaHS want to increase their understanding and monitoring of weather and climate in the Carolinas. This gave me the idea of having a way to help monitor the weather on a broader spectrum to anywhere in the world. I sketched my third idea, of a redesigned, non-gamified app that allows the user to report their weather in their current location, such as rain, fog, snow, etc. This gives users who want to help the environment and those who want to keep track of climate change in specific areas of the world.

INSPIRATIONS

CONCLUSION

After doing some research and sketching, I found myself leaning towards astronomy and weather-related ideas for my project. I learned that there are many apps redesigned for stargazers, but not as much or as specific for storm spotters. So I decided to lean more towards moving towards the Spotti app for this project in the end.
